Keeping up with open-source AI

Hopefully a helpful resource for others trying to follow new model releases

October 03, 2026

If it wasn't clear from this blog I love open-source AI again. I had fallen out of love with it for a little while but the current crop of big and smart MoE models are doing incredible things with "reasonable" resources. The image/video/audio side of the world isn't super relevant to me professionally, but fun to watch the evolution of. Hopefully one day soon we won't see ads like this anymore:

(Seen on the Danforth, I enjoy this restaurant but yikes.)

So pi+Qwen whipped up a little quick tool to watch the HuggingFace trending models and publish new entries in the top 100 to an RSS feed. Code is here https://github.com/evulnet/modelwatch and I have hosted the feed here https://du62m9e5v3var.cloudfront.net/feed.xml - I'll keep that maintained as long as it doesn't get insane traffic.

Note, the feed makes available the date a model was first uploaded to HuggingFace and the date it began trending. The latter is the primary date the feed will render.

Happy vLLM, SGlang and ComfyUI'ing!
